Honey from rocks?

Dear church family,

There's a great song by Brooke Ligertwood called 'Honey in the rock.' It's from Psalm 81:16 which says this, 'But you would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock, I would satisfy you.' In this psalm there is a sense of God saying to the people that if only they would turn to Him, He could rescue them, defeat their enemies, and not only that He could also provide for them all that they need.

Rocks don't produce honey! Bees produce honey in beehives – that's where you will find honey – not in rocks! So why does the psalmist talk about honey from a rock? When I dwelt on this passage in Psalm 81 it made me think of God's supernatural provision. God can provide in some crazy ways, and I am sure that some of us have stories of this. Our God is a God who is beyond the rules of nature and can provide honey for his people found in a rock because God created everything. Why then do we sometimes limit what God can provide to our understanding and ways of being and doing? God can do anything; we are the ones who need the faith to trust He can provide in ways that are beyond our realm of understanding and logic – like honey coming from a rock.

Brooke Ligertwood states that she wrote the song 'Honey in the rock,' to express how 'In the wilderness we can still experience sweetness because we know and trust Jesus.' The lyrics of her song are, 'There's honey in the rock, water in the stone, manna on the ground, no matter where I go. I don't need to worry now that I know, everything I need you've got.' If you are experiencing a time of wilderness – maybe that is money worries or anxiety about a certain issue or something else, there is opportunity to find sweetness in your situation. When we decide to trust Jesus with what we are going through, He can do amazing things in us and in our situations. It might be that God doesn't immediately sort out the issues, but He allows you to see His goodness in the midst of what you are going through. God provides in many ways, sometimes it's a sense of peace, sometimes it's physical and financial provision, sometimes it's a person who comes alongside us in difficult seasons and so on. It is for us to trust Jesus in our circumstances.

If God can provide honey from a rock – He can do amazing things for those who choose to trust Him and look to Him for help!

With love,

Katie x
